Lori Lansens Author

If you ask bestselling author Lori Lansens where she finds her muse she will tell you, “My muse is the ON switch on my computer.”

“I’m a Cinderella story,” Lori told me. “I have to admit that I have a fabulous lucky life. I’m an ‘overnight success’ that took 20 years and a roller coaster of ups and downs to get here.”

Yes Lori does seem to have a fabulous lucky life, but that doesn’t mean it’s always been easy or that she has always been successful.

“The first short story I ever wrote was published, the first screenplay I wrote was made into a movie, and my first novel was published. I’ve been very lucky with my firsts. But certainly not everything I’ve written has been an accomplishment. The dozen short stories I wrote after that first one were all rejected. For 5 years I put everything I had into a screenplay that went nowhere. And I chucked 129 manuscript pages of a novel into the garbage.”

Cyrena Nouzille Alehouse Proprietor

Cyrena Nouzille is a self-described beer nut. When her husband Jean Luc gave her a home brewery kit for one of those “almost milestone near-mid-life-crisis” birthdays I’m sure neither of them imagined that the gift would spark a hobby that would turn into a business 10 years later.

Cyrena, along with business partners brewmaster Dave Grittiths and chef Ray Luna opened Ladyface Alehouse and Brasserie on November 9, 2009 at 29281 Agoura Road in Agoura, California. (Not so coincidentally at the base of Ladyface Mountain!)

A resident of Old Agoura, Cyrena is a former exhibit designer and project coordinator for The Los Angeles Natural History Museum and Petersen Auto Museum turned stay-at-home mom who started brewing beer on her kitchen 10 years ago. She became friends with more Old Agoura residents who were also home brewers; most notably Dave Griffiths who later became the head brewer at BJ’s in Oxnard. Dave and Cyrena daydreamed about opening a brewery of their own one day and 5 years ago got serious about it and sat down to write a business plan. Cyrena met Ray, a former chef at Spago Beverly Hills and Shutters on the Beach, through her cousin and they hit it off immediately.

Julie Gerns

When Julie Gerns was growing up she didn’t play with Barbie or dress her up in pretty clothes. She decorated Barbie’s house. “My dad built me a dollhouse and I decorated it down to the carpeting and wallpaper.” It seems she was born to be a designer. In fact she began her career in interior design in an unlikely place right after graduating high school. She worked in a paint store and helped customers choose paint colors and wallpaper and took college design classes at night. She quickly moved out of retail and started working for builders designing the interiors of custom estate homes and luxury apartments.

“One of my biggest regrets is not finishing school,” Julie told me, “but when I was in college a professor actually asked me if I could teach a senior seminar class. I told her that I hadn’t even taken the class. She told me that I had enough work experience to do it. Instead of being flattered it actually made me feel like I was wasting my time. It was so unprofessional. I was so busy at work and thought that if they wanted me to start teaching classes before I even graduated then maybe I’d learned all I could in school, so after that semester I never went back."

Esther Hopkins

After graduating UCLA, Esther Hopkins had a decision to make: Med school or Law School? Law school at Loyola Marymount won out. Her parents could not have been prouder.

Esther is not only a first generation Californian, but a first generation American. Born to Mexican immigrant parents, Esther grew up in the Mar Vista area of Los Angeles. Her parents moved to this country for a better life but they didn’t quite know how to go about providing a good education to their children. Fortunately for Esther, she had a teacher who recognized that she was incredibly bright, had her tested and found that she was gifted. She was put into classes with other gifted kids and grew up surrounded by good kids with educated families that welcomed her into their lives and helped her parents put her on the right academic track. It was extremely important to Esther not only to receive a college degree, but to become a professional – to make something of herself; something that would have been much more difficult in her parent’s home country. She was the first in her very large Hispanic family to graduate college. (She did want me to mention that her sister and her brother followed suit soon after.)

Paulette McElwain, Visionary

Paulette is my Shero because she creates a supportive, even loving, atmosphere for patients at the Virginia League for Planned Parenthood, many of whom lack health insurance. After sending a nurse to "hold my hand" during my IUD placement, she distracted my boyfriend (who’d paled two shades in the waiting room) with a guided tour.
~Nominated by Joia Wood, Charlottesville , Va.

Spurred by the growing need for women’s health services, Paulette launched a $4.6 million campaign for VLPP’s new facility, opened last month at 201 N. Hamilton. “Access to affordable family planning often means, quite literally, the difference between a woman finishing college or not,” Paulette, VLPP’s President and CEO, notes.  On weekends she hits the Goochland countryside with her horse, Splash.

Judge Debora Faulkner —Humanitarian and Humorist

“I would like to nominate Greenville County Probate Judge Debora Faulkner as my Shero. Not only has she distinguished her court, she is a great public speaker dedicated to educating the public on the legal system. During her three terms, Debora was also a caregiver for her deceased father, assisted her sister in recovery from breast cancer, and beat her own bout with breast cancer. She proudly serves on the board of the Upstate Affiliate of Susan G. Komen.”

~Nominated by Ellie Summerton, Laurens, SC

Debora giggles and gives me the skinny on legal lingo bloopers she’s encountered—they are not the probation office and they don’t take urine samples. But this down-to-earth judge is downright serious about her work. “I see Sheros every day—women taking care of husbands with dementia, moms appointed as guardians for adult children with head injuries, women providing the glue that keeps families together.”

Jill Sikkelee —Selfless and Strong

"Jill is my Shero for the sheer number of superhero outfits she wears with grace! She’s the mother of five children. She’s an athlete, riding for Team GHS Every Woman and training for an Ironman. She’s a mentor and a friend to many women. Oh, and she works full time!"

~Nominated by Elizabeth Brady, Spartanburg, SC

“I’ve always admired Sacagawea,” Jill says. “Here’s a woman who wasn’t even treated as an equal to men and yet she led them through the wilderness, she cooked their food, and she trapped, all with a baby on her back. Women today have it made in comparison!” Jill will represent today’s woman in a full Ironman challenge in Barcelona on October 4th of this year.

Carmen Martinez/ Fights for Her Family First

Carmen is the face of humility. An ordinary woman who immigrated to America and never made it past high school, she fought to keep her children’s education first.  Now as I am a school principal, I thank my mom for teaching me the value of education. Her determination to be a part of the American Dream makes her my Shero.

~Nominated by her daughter Maritsa Alger, Hampton, VA

Carmen is a retired day care provider who adores caring for her grandchildren. She does not possess degrees of achievement but is well-rehearsed in many subjects. “Family first! Our acts impact on our children.”

Kathy Hartley – Renaissance Woman

Kathy of Ventura is known by her colleagues and peers to be one of the most genuine, community-minded people they’ve ever met.

She is the owner of the Lavender Inn in Ojai, The Ojai Culinary School and the Ojai Playhouse Theatre. Kathy and her husband, Mark, also recently opened the Watermark Restaurant in downtown Ventura. “We have a passion to restore and enhance old buildings into beautiful, amazing and meaningful spaces.”

Kathy gracefully combines art, music and food to create a symphony of positive energy and experiences in all her endeavors. She gives back much more to the community than just restored architectural gems.

It is not uncommon to find Kathy cooking, with the help of friends at the Inn, for a nonprofit organization’s event that she has invited in to hold their fundraiser. “I find that food is a common dominator that brings all walks of people together.”

Lettie Lopez – Landmark Restaurateur

Lettie Lopez of Sal’s Mexican Inn in Oxnard has been helping with the family business since the age of 18. She greets everyone that walks through the doors, just as her father did. It is her mother though that inspires us dreamers and entrepreneurs.

“My mother, 20 at the time, was encouraged by my grandfather to open and run her own restaurant. She cooked and managed the restaurant with children in tow, no less.” Carefully saving, Lettie’s mother was able to help provide the remaining funds to buy the building in 1952, where the restaurant still stands.

Lettie carries the same spirit of hospitality that her parents, Sal and Mary, bestowed on their patrons. “I never tire of hearing customers share their warm and sometimes poignant stories of growing up, dining and celebrating the moments of their life in our restaurant.”

Theo Stephan – Olive Oil Artesian

"Seek, find, taste, and balance," is how Los Olivos shopkeeper and olive oil maker Theo describes her work. Theo is an olive oil expert—she has the only gourmet olive oil food club in the world and her oils were also the only organic ones to capture the prestigious gold and silver medals at the Los Angeles International Olive Oil Competitions.

At her shop, Global Gardens, Theo offers different blends of olive oils, sauces, and dressings along with complimentary items for the kitchen and home. Her love of entertaining, art, and food are reflected in the products she carries from around the world. “When someone says it’s drag to eat healthy, I show them it’s not by encouraging them to try the recipes I share and teach them how to use the oils and others foods I offer.”

Frinée Warren – Garden Fairy

Need is always a great catalyst of invention. In the case of Frinée of Ventura, it began with a desire to nurture herself after the birth of her second child.

“Your body is so raw right after, and you need healthy foods to heal.” With this concept, Frinée began her company, Sprout About, two-and-a-half years ago. Frinée understands how time-consuming shopping locally and organically can be, so her company takes the hard work out of bringing healthy food to Santa Barbara and Ventura’s tables.

With Sprout About, her clients can create custom orders, and Frinée works with about 12 local farms to make sure that everything is provided for. Each week families can pick up their orders at various pick-up locations in the area, bringing home organic produce, eggs, bread and even yummy cookie dough, from just one quick stop.
