Delacroix to Monet: Masterpieces of 19th-Century Painting from the Walters Art Museum

Delacroix to Monet: Masterpieces of 19th-Century Painting from the Walters Art Museum
January 30 – May 30, 2010

Assembled over a period of more than 140 years, the collection of the Walters Art Museum (Baltimore, MD) entails one of the finest holdings of 19th-century paintings in the United States. Representing the only West Coast venue, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art is pleased to present this exhibition, which includes 40 works from this renowned collection, selected for their art-historical significance and superior quality. Although strongly weighted in favor of French painting, this exhibition, like the collection, also includes major works by British, Spanish, and American artists.

Each painting is deeply satisfying on its own and displayed together, make for a ravishing exhibition that well captures the historical breadth and depth of the Walters’ collection, which was formed by father William T. Walters (1819-1894) and son Henry (1848-1931). While William focused his efforts on Barbizon school painting and academic stars such as Paul Delaroche and Ernest Meissonier, Henry sought to balance the collection by adding major works by earlier artists such as Eugène Delacroix and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, as well as by the Impressionists.

PUT YOUR FINGER ON THE BUTTON - WOMEN PHOTOGRAPHERS at New Age Art in West Hollywood

“Put Your Finger On The Button” is new exhibition at New Image Art involving15 photographic artists from various fields of concentration, ranging from commercial to documentary, auto- biographical, and photo-based art. In a caringly curated show New Image Art has selected each artist from a familial circle of friends and associates. This collection of photographs testifies to the ingenuity and cunning that a photographer has to combine, along with an eye for a picture, in order to get a brilliant image. A compilation of portraiture, landscape, action, and journalistic styling demonstrates each woman’s capacity to display the truths that lie beyond the literal.

Featuring the photography of: Alex Prager, Alma Márquez, Amanda Marsalis, Ashira Siegel, Brandy Eve, Cheryl Dunn, Deanna Templeton, Jeaneen Lund, Kassia Meador, Laura Flippen, Lauren Dukoff, Rebecca Wright, Susanne Melanie Berry, Taylor Brittenham

The paintings by Monet form the core of a strong group of Impressionist works, including beautiful landscapes by Camille Pissarro and Alfred Sisley.

Each painting is deeply satisfying on its own and displayed together, make for a ravishing exhibition that well captures the historical breadth and depth of the Walters’ collection. This is an exhibition not to be missed.

Not All Black Girls Know How to Eat

With a childhood defined by poverty, hunger, foster care and sexual abuse, Stephanie Covington Armstrong does not fit the typical portrayal of a woman with an eating disorder. Armstrong's searing new memoir, Not All Black Girls Know How to Eat: A Story of Bulimia (Lawrence Hill Books, August 2009), chronicles her painful journey to the brink of death and back, and explores how she grappled with the stereotypes of a disorder that does not have many treatment options tailored to black women. Armstrong's poignant path to healing helps shatter the barriers of race and socioeconomic status that prevent many women of color from seeking help for this devastating disorder, and her compelling story of heartbreak and triumph holds universal appeal for all women, regardless of race. For more information, visit NotAllBlackGirls.com.

Stephanie Covington Armstrong will stop for an event on Monday, November 23 from 7:00-8:30 pm at Vroman's Bookstore (695 E. Colorado Blvd. Pasadena, CA 91101). This event is free and open to the public. For more information on this event, please contact Jennifer Ramos at (626) 440-5320.

What began as a dream of bringing the world’s leading flamenco artists to the stages of Santa Barbara has become the Flamenco Arts Festival, which this year is celebrating ten years of sold-out concerts and highly-anticipated workshops.

The star of this year’s festival is Maria Juncal, winner of the Antonio Gades National Award of Flamenco Dance, who will bring her nine-member company to the Lobero Theatre for the U.S. premiere of Tercera Llamada – Moment of Enchantment. Developed in collaboration with flamenco master Ciro and music director Juan Parrilla, Juncal describes her latest production as “a chant to life, love and death – to the before, during and after of a life that always offers happiness.”

The performance will take place at the Lobero Theatre on Saturday, September 26. The program begins at 7:30 pm with the presentation of the Festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award to Juan Talavera, followed immediately by Tercera Llamada.
