viewsChris Stevenson is Getting His Community Into Shape
By Charlene Ross, Wednesday, September 1, 2010Chris Stevenson, owner of Stevenson Fitness had a dream. He wanted to open up a different kind of gym. He wanted a gym with a neighborhood vibe and family environment. He wanted a gym where staff members from the front desk personnel to the class instructors to the personal trainers knew the names of the gym clientele. But most of all, he wanted to open a gym where people actually enjoyed going to the gym and working out instead dreading it. Through hard work, a knack for hiring the right people and taking the time to really get to know the members of his community Chris Stevenson seems to have gotten what he wants.
Stevenson has a business degree from Baldwin Wallace College in Ohio and later earned a personal training certification from the National Academy of Sports Medicine. He has used his knowledge in both fields to create a neighborhood gym that everyone loves to go to.
Stevenson opened his doors in Oak Park in a small storefront in 2003. The friendliness and expertise of Chris and his staff quickly made his gym extremely popular. This month Chris is opening a new gym right across the street in a space over quadruple the size. The new gym will offer fitness classes as well as nutrition services, personal training, state of the art cardio equipment, and child care.
“We do a lot of unique things you won’t find at cookie cutter gyms that want your membership dollars, but don’t really care whether you use the gym or not,” says Stevenson. “We want you here and we want you to enjoy working out.
“We have fun events like group triathlon training, offer classes that everybody asks for like Zumba and yoga and kickboxing, and we have unique classes like Kick A$$ (kickboxing with weights) and BAM – a mix of boxing, aerobics, and martial arts. We also have group classes for the whole family and on Friday afternoon we have a Happy Hour workout which sometimes migrates to the Happy Hour at the restaurant a few doors down.”
Stevenson also participates in fundraising – the pink hair is the result of him challenging the community to help a team of women who call themselves the Pink Warriors raise $10,000 for the Avon 3-Day Breast Cancer Walk. When the Pink Warriors reached their goal he dyed his blonde hair pink in support.
“Nothing makes me feel better than knowing people actually look forward to coming to the gym and that they have fun once they get here.” Chris Stevenson must be feeling pretty good indeed.
What do you like best about wearing a skirt?
“It feels incredibly free. I really enjoy the freedom.”
